How far is Tempest (Mt Baw Baw) from Melbourne?

Baw Baw’s located only 2 and a half hours drive from Melbourne. Reaching the Resort is easy, simply take a short drive along the Princes or Warburton Highways and follow the signs.

Try the alternative route from Melbourne ~ follow the Princes Highway to Moe, turn left to the Erica Road. Five minutes out of Erica is the new South Face Road. It is unsealed, but it provides all weather access without steep gradients or sharp hairpin bends. The new road joins the Baw Baw Road at the relocated ticket box at Neulynes Mill. Take it slowly and enjoy the views. They are breathtaking. See http://www.southfaceroad.info for more information.

Will I have to carry chains for my car?

Even though you may not need to use them, chains must be carried at all times during winter. They can be hired locally in Melbourne and Gippsland or closer to the mountain and can be quick and easy to fit. If you haven’t fitted chains before, it is recommended you find out from the hirer how to fit them to your vehicle. There are a number of chain fitting areas along the mountain road where you can pull over to fit chains. It is likely that you will be stopped and directed to fit your chains should they be required. Our preference would be diamond patterned chains.
